1984 book review

In this book, the populace is divided into two parts, the Party and the proles, which refer to the exploiting and the exploited class, the upper class and the underdog. It’s a hellish world with a dictatorial government, unbearable stupidity and countless falsifications’ lack of humanity, awareness and civilization makes it unbelievable. The dystopia described in George Orwell’s nearly 70-year-old novel “1984” suddenly feels all too familiar. A world in which Big Brother is always listening in, and high-tech devices can eavesdrop in people’s homes. A world of endless war, where fear and hate are drummed up against foreigners, and movies show boatloads of refugees dying at sea. A world in which the government insists that reality is not “something objective, external, existing in its own right” — but rather, “whatever the Party holds to be truth is truth.”

Living in a society with limited freedom of expression is not, in any case, enjoyable. A Totalitarian society is a good example of such a society, because although it provides control for the people, it can deny them a great deal of freedom to express themselves. The fictional society in George Orwell’s 1984 also stands as a metaphor for a Totalitarian society. Communication, personal beliefs, and individual loyalty to the government are all controlled by the inner party which governs the people of Oceania in order to keep them from rebelling. Current society in America is much more democratic. It contrasts with Orwell’s society of 1984 because communication, personal beliefs and the people’s loyalty to the government are all determined by the individual. The story of 1984 reflects a society that totally contrasts with America today. While Orwell’s objective was primarily written to exaggerate the Totalitarian/Communist and other conditions of society surrounding him, 1984 presents an important guide to life for modern Americans. Just as a major objective of learning American history is to ensure that we do not repeat our mistakes, 1984 can give warnings to both government systems and individuals regarding how society should not be controlled. The vigorous control system presented in the book stands as a method by which no American would want to live.

Characters

Winston Smith

Winston Smith is the protagonist and narrator, a rebellious and intellectual Party member who works at the Ministry of Truth and secretly hates Big Brother.

Winston is a 39-year old man who works at the Ministry of Truth, where his job is to alter the historical record to match the government’s official propaganda. Outwardly, Winston Smith is a meek and obedient member of The Party. He carefully practices his facial expressions and is always conscious of being watched, even in his apartment. However, his internal monologue is seditious and revolutionary.

Winston is just old enough to remember a time before the current regime. He idolizes the past and revels in the few details he can still remember. Whereas younger people have no memory of any other society and thus function as ideal cogs in The Party’s machine, Winston remembers the past and supports The Party only out of fear and necessity. Physically, Winston looks older than he is. He moves stiffly and with a bent back. He is in poor health overall, though without any specific disease.

Winston is often arrogant. He imagines that the proles are the key to overthrowing the government and he romanticizes their lives without knowing much about their reality. He is also eager to believe that he has been recruited by the Brotherhood, despite his relative lack of importance. Orwell uses Winston to demonstrate that passive rebellion merely makes the rebel part of the system he wants to subvert, thus dooming him to serve it in one way or another. Rebellion and oppression are just two sides of the same dynamic. Winston is thus doomed to betray the Party and to be exposed, arrested, tortured, and broken. His fate is inescapable because he relies on the mechanisms provided to him instead of forging his own path

Julia

Julia is a young woman who works at the Ministry of Truth in the Fiction Department. Like Winston, she secretly despises the Party and the world it has shaped around her, but outwardly behaves as a dutiful and content member of the Party. Unlike Winston, Julia’s rebellion is centered not on revolution or changing the world, but on personal desires. She wishes for the freedom to enjoy her sexuality and her existence as she pleases and sees her private resistance as a path towards those goals.

Just as she pretends to be a loyal citizen, Julia is also pretending to be a fervent revolutionary when she and Winston are contacted by the Brotherhood. She has little sincere interest in these goals, but goes along because it is the only avenue of freedom open to her. It is telling that at the end, after her own torture and breaking, she is an empty vessel devoid of emotion and yet harbors a strong dislike for Winston, who she once professed to love and saw as a path to her own liberation.

Julia is actually very unsuitable to Winston in terms of romance or sexuality. Like Winston, she is not nearly as free as she believes herself to be, and is constrained completely by the choices society puts in front of her. Julia invents her love for Winston as a way of convincing herself that her relationship with him is genuine and the result of her own choices.

O’Brien

O’Brien is initially introduced as Winston’s superior at the Ministry and a high-ranking member of the Party. Winston suspects that O’Brien sympathizes with the resistance and is thrilled when he discovers (or believes he discovers) that O’Brien is a member of the Brotherhood. O’Brien later appears at Winston’s jail cell and participates in Winston’s torture and tells Winston that he purposely lured Winston into betrayal.

O’Brien is an unreal character; virtually anything the reader believes they learn about him is later revealed to be a lie. As a result, the reader actually knows nothing about O’Brien at all. He is a completely unreliable character. In this he is actually representative of the universe Orwell is imagining, a world where nothing is true and everything is a lie. In the universe of 1984, it is impossible to know if The Brotherhood and its leader Emmanuel Goldstein actually exist or if they are simply pieces of propaganda used to control the population. Similarly, we cannot know if there is an actual “Big Brother,” an individual or even an oligarchy that rules Oceania. O’Brien’s emptiness as a character is thus purposeful: He is as unreal, changeable, and ultimately mindlessly cruel as the world he represents.

Syme

Winston’s co-worker at the Ministry working on a new edition of the Newspeak dictionary is the closest thing to a friend that Winston has. Syme is intelligent and yet seems satisfied with his lot, finding his work interesting. Winston predicts he will disappear because of his intelligence, which turns out to be correct. Aside from demonstrating to the reader how society works in the novel, Syme is also an interesting contrast to Winston: Syme is intelligent, and thus dangerous and is never seen again, while Winston is allowed back into society after he is broken, because Winston never actually represented any real danger.

Mr. Charrington

Appearing initially as a kind old man who rents Winston a private room and sells him some interesting antiques, Mr. Charrington is later revealed to be a member of the Thought Police who has been setting Winston up for arrest from the very beginning. Charrington thus contributes to the level of deception that the Party engages in and to the fact that Winston and Julia’s fates are completely controlled from the very beginning.

Big Brother

The symbol of The Party, a middle-aged man depicted on posters and other official materials, there is no certainty that Big Brother actually exists as a person in Orwell’s universe. It is very likely he is an invention and a propaganda tool. His main presence in the novel is as a looming figure on posters, and as part of the mythology of the Party, as “Big Brother is Watching You.” What is interesting is that these ubiquitous posters strike those who support the Party as somewhat comforting, seeing Big Brother as a protective uncle, while people like Winston see him as an ominous, threatening figure.

Emmanuel Goldstein

The leader of The Brotherhood, the resistance organization working to foment revolution against the Party. Like Big Brother, Emmanuel Goldstein seems to be an invention used to trap resistors like Winston, although it is possible, he does exist, or did exist and has been co-opted by the Party. The lack of certainty is emblematic of the way the Party has corrupted knowledge and objective facts, and the same disorientation and confusion experienced by Winston and Julia in regard to Goldstein’s existence or nonexistence is felt by the reader. This is a particularly effective technique that Orwell uses in the novel.

Katharine Smith

Winston’s wife. She does not appear in the novel, but Winston spends time thinking about her and her devotion to the party. He is bothered by the lack of real emotions the two shared and how she was only intimate with him in order to have children for the Party. In one of the most poignant moments of the novel, Winston admits to a passing desire he had to murder her while they were walking alone. She may or may not be alive somewhere else in Oceania.

Review on Copper Beeches

The Adventure of the Copper Beeches is the twelfth and final short story in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle.

Summary

When a young governess, unemployed and desperate for a position, accepts a job with a couple living in a remote country home, her positive first impressions of the man and his family begin to change. With a mixture of fear and uncertainty, she asks Sherlock Holmes to investigate the increasingly disturbing events that have begun to unfold around her.

Review

This was one of the more exciting stories in the collection, with a bit more action and drama in it than some of the previous stories.  Violet Hunter, the governess, is an interesting character: strong and sensible, which coupled with the mystery at The Copper Beeches made for a very enjoyable read.  There is quite a lot going on in this little story, ensuring that the pace is fast and the storyline engaging.

Analysis

One of the particular deductive skills that Holmes displays and explains in this case is the estimation of a suspect’s personality by that of their child. While explaining this method of reasoning, Holmes refers to Watson’s medical profession; we can understand this to mean that Holmes is up to date with the most current medical and psychological theories, insofar as they may be of use to his detective work. More so, or at least more explicitly than in other cases, Holmes finds it important to form a psychological profile of the suspect both in order to ascertain guilt and to form a plan of action.

Visiting the U.N.

On the 21st of February, we went to the office of the United Nations for Armenia within the framework of the “Getting acquainted with the institutions” project. We were hosted by the United Nations Armenia team, including Armine Petrosyan, National Information Officer at United Nations; Niels Scott, Resident Coordinator a.i.; Zaruhi Tonoyan, Program Coordinator at UNFPA (UN Population Fund) Armenia. They have prepared a whole meeting agenda, which included an introduction part, presentation and informative part, activity, and book-giving part. As our meeting took a place right after the book-giving day, UNFPA decided to share with us their few books related to children, and a new one, which is called “50 Women with Disabilities Who Changed the World”. We even had an opportunity of meeting its co-author, Writer, Poet, and Editor-in-Chief at the Text Platform Hasmik Simonian, who was happy and excited to meet us at the UN. As I mentioned before, at the start of our meeting we introduced ourselves and talked a little about our experiences, hobbies, skills, and goals. Later on, Armenie told us that our group from «Mkhitar Sebastatsi» was one of the most active and motivated students out of those she met before. It was also a pleasure for all of us to have an opportunity of sharing the knowledge and experience that we had. Nextly, we had a little meeting with Niels Scott, who shared his emotions and excitement after our introduction. It was his first day in Armenia after a long flight from Africa, and he decided to take a part in our UN meeting. Later, we had a funny activity part, when we talked and tried on ourselves some disabilities, which are very common in the world. E.g. blindness, deafness, and so on. The main goal of the activity was to let its participants feel and see the complications that disabled people face every day. Then we shared our thoughts about the games. On the one hand, we had a great time helping each other with our problems and trying to solve them, but on the other hand, all of the problems that we faced in real life could have been impossible to solve even with a good friend next to us. Then, we had a short quiz about the UN and SDGs, after which we had a winner: Amalia, who got an extra present for her excellent answers. And lastly, we had a short talk with Hasmik Simonian and a book-giving moment, which was an adorable moment for all of us. We had ourselves many books, stickers, bracelets with SDGs, and so on. It was a true pleasure being at UN with such an amazing and professional team. We enjoyed every moment there and looking forward to our next meeting and events together.

Winter Camp 2023. Summary

So it’s the end of January and here is my summary for our Winter Camp 2023.
As always Winter Camp started on the second week of January and lasts 3 weeks. Each of us had to choose one teacher. My squad was Ms. Irina. We cooperated with Miss Nune, Miss Elena, Miss Hasmik, and so on.

Things that were the same in all squads:

  • Ice skating
  • Food making
  • Game playing
  • Sports
  • Projects with teachers
  • Movie watching
  • Reading and discussion
  • Meetings
  • Theather plays

These are the activities that every squad had. The majority of it we did these activities mostly with our elder teachers, who suggested movies to watch, and texts to read and discuss. In the meantime, they were being many meetings with different guests and all of us had an opportunity to participate there.

Things that were unique in our squad:

  • Stayed at school for 24 hours
  • Unsolved murder case file game
  • Discussing each of our specific unique characters
  • Acquiring new friends (Mostly from 10th graders)
  • Sweet hour

Our squad was well known for our lovely personalities our fun projects and mainly for staying at school for 24 hours. That was actually the best experience and i got close to many people from my squad. Overall this year i had the best winter camp!!

Last week of winter camp (3rd week)

It’s hard to belive that winter camp is already over. Everything was so cool and fun. But for now let’s talk about the last week.

We took part in an Intellectual competitions. Our team answerd many questions and learned new things.

We also played many board games, summarized the epic poems with Nune Movsisyan. We’ve also been in theatrical performance. And had a meeting with psychologist Susanna Chalikyan as well.

All i can say is that this was an amazing experience. I met new people got close to many learned new stuff overall i had an amazing time.

Winter camp 2nd week

I can’t belive that winter camp’s second week is already over. This week was so full with different activities, such as board games, sports, meetings and discussions.

During this week we had meetings with Nune Movsisyan, Nune Aydinyan, Hasmik Ghazaryan and Ashot Tigranyan.
With Nune Movsisyan me discussed our researches about the epic poems. With Hasmik Ghazaryan we read a short story, which was called «Պարացելսի վարդը» and examined it. Then with Mr Tigranyan we did a test and had an interesting conversation. And in the end with Nune Aydinyan we payed “Politea”.

This week we had a military training. That was so interesting because we got to know some things about the army. And we had a physical exercise class as well, and as lask week it went so well.

  • We went to ice skating. , that was so fun with the group, we truly enjoyed our time.

We also took part in an Intellectual competitions. Well we didn’t win but at least we answerd many questions and learned new things.

Can’t forget to talk about the most interesting thing that our group did this week, so we stayed at school for 24 hours. it was so cool and honestly one of my favorite days ever. ( you can read more about my 24 in school here)

24 hours in school

Our lovely group stayed at school for 24 hours and this was my experience.

After discussing with our teacher and agreeing on doing this project i was very excited and i always wanted to do something like this.

So after classes we went to get ingredient because our “day” started out by making food for our show delicious mess. We were divided by groups and everyone was making something different. My group was in charge of making the chicken nuggets which turned out amazing. While making food we were listen to music dancing having fun

After eating we cleaned up after ourselves and we changed clothes to play basketball/volleyball and i guess our favorite game flag.

We played for several hours then Ms. Irina stopped us so we can go watch the movie that we planed to watch beforehand. We got our snacks ready and we proceeded to watch the horror movie the nun although for me i was laughing. Me Ani and Serli sang in marmarya which was so fun and i loved how while we sang it echoed.

Around 2 am we played hide and seek. It was so fun, but we didn’t have a lot of places to hide so we didn’t play much, so we also ended up going to the room. We started playing some truth or dare but it got boring so we all just were on our phones. We all stayed up late, and we were laughing till 5 am we just fell asleep later. woke up at 8:00am then went to eat breakfast. After we ate breakfast, we were all waiting for our rides to pick us up and leave. I had a really great time I would actually want to do it again soon with the same people. This was actually one of the best days of my life. Thank you too Ms. Irina for actually making this possible

1-st winter week review

The first week of winter camp is already over. As we know, after Christmas holidays, it’s hard to get back to everyday classes. But our school has found a way. In January we have a camp, and during those three weeks we spend a great time by doing projects, group activities, having meetings, discussions and trips as well. Also during the camp, we not only make new friends, but also get closer to the people we already know. I was very excited this year for the winter camp for some reason.

The first week we met up with teacher Ms. Nune and we translated epics with her. I personally chose an Arabic epic called Antar and i worked with Julia and Ani. We worked with Ms. Elena, and we translated and read the story «Անթառամները». We also worked with Ms. Hasmik, and we had a discussion about the movie called the crash.

We played a lot of games my personal favorite was the unsolved murder case file of Zoey and Avery the twin girls it was very interesting. We mostly played Mafia and many other games but a memorable thing was when we played ping pong in class.

We did gymnastics and after warmups we played flag that was fun. We were laughing so much while warming up.

i know that next week is going to be more interesting a fun wee is waiting for us!!
